NHSD has been working in the field towards the support of fishermen residing in Keti Bandar since 2008. However, their situation has only worsened with time due to climate change, decreased district contributions, and their limited sources of livelihood. NHSD project focuses towards provision of food rations so that their families continue to live, and in the long term towards procurement of boats and the construction of homes that will sustainably withstand flooding situation in their region.
The fishermen of Keti Bandar do not have significant education or sources of sustainable livelihood except for fishing. They rely on boats which are continuously leaking or have limited coverage in the Indian Ocean. The district government has abandoned them. They continue to live in dire straits because they are living right on the precipice of the ocean, where their homes drown and their boats continue to break.
Construction of houses whereby their families will be safe against the monsoon and other floodings caused by climate change The procurement of new boats which are designed to withstand the increased pressures of torrents of rain as well as increased flooding which has impacted their region. The provision of food rations so that the families have a source of healthy nutrition.
The fishermen can live and work peacefully and sustainably given their current situation.
