In April a week of activities in Japan was followed by a week of activities at Randolph-Macon College. Taylor’s monument, placed facing her schools and next to the memorial to the Endo’s children, symbolizing a bridge between Japan and the US, was dedicated in Ishinomaki's Memorial Park on April 16th. This was followed by three Ishinomaki school visits for activities with students and a meeting with the Taylor Scholarship students at Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School. The Endo’s then came to America for a week long series of events at Randolph-Macon College ending with the 30th Taylor Bunko dedication at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA on April 28th. Please see our Facebook page for all of the news!
We were excited to be together again for a board dinner in Tokyo and our Zoom board meeting on July 1st. TAMF plans to provide three new Taylor bunkos this year including one at the Sendai YMCA International Hotel and Pastry School. We plan to install a total of sixteen over the next five years so that each K-12 school in Ishinomaki will have a Taylor bunko.
We also decided on a long term maintenance and renewal plan for the Taylor bunkos as they each reach ten years in service. The original seven Taylor Bunko’s in the schools where Taylor taught are now ten years old or older. Endo-san, TAMF adviser and bookshelf maker, will be working with each school to determine any maintenance needed on the existing bunkos and TAMF will provide a 50,000 yen book coupon to each school to buy new books to replace and/or upgrade their library. Teachers and administrators in Japan rotate schools every three years to it gives TAMF the opportunity to renew the Taylor bunko with each of them and the students.
TAMF is honored to have Endo-san represent TAMF in the Minamihama Tsunami Memorial Park consultative meetings. TAMF was previously represented by “Ganbaro Ishinomaki” and is most appreciative of their support. Endo-san has also been was recognized for his work as “Katharibe” ( a volunteer to talk about his experiences at the 3.11 disaster) at the Kadonowaki ES museum, part of the Memorial Park. He was one of the first seven people to receive the commendation. There is so much to see and learn at the Memorial Park that is it best to schedule a half day there at least!
