Story of Siblings: How Access to Water Is Making School Life Better

By Jigmy Palzor Lama | MEAL Manager

Riya and Rijan showing their school water tap.

This report highlights the utilization of the latest GlobalGiving contribution, which contibuted to construct drinking water tap stand in Janta Secondary School in Udaypur District, Eastern Nepal, improving access to safe drinking water for 210 students.

Rijan and Riya are siblings attending to the same school. There have been some good changes in their school recently. A reliable water connection, cleaner toilets, better personal hygiene.

Until recently, water availability at their school was unreliable. The temporary water arrangement was inconsistent; sometimes water flowed and went to waste, while at other times the taps remained dry. This made everyday activities difficult for students, particularly when using the toilets and maintaining personal hygiene. The lack of a dependable water supply put their health and well-being at risk and made it challenging for the school to maintain proper sanitation.

With the installation of a drinking water connection at the school, things have changed. Along with Rijan and Riya, other students can now access water more conveniently throughout the school day. They no longer have to depend on an unreliable arrangement for their basic water needs. Water is now available to support drinking, handwashing, toilet use and other essential hygiene practices.

A reliable water connection may seem like a small change, but its impact reaches far beyond the tap. It helps children stay healthy, practice good hygiene and focus on what matters most, learning, growing and enjoying their childhood.

Because every child deserves a school where clean water and proper sanitation are never out of reach.
