Summary

The Philippines experiences some of the world's most extreme climate disasters. Powerful typhoons hit the island nation every year, damaging schools and leaving children with no safe place to learn or play. Since 2007, All Hands and Hearts has had a mission to make an impact on post-disaster education and health by rebuilding disaster-resilient schools and investing in community-wide risk reduction and resilience training in affected Filipino communities where unmet needs are the greatest.

Challenge

When school infrastructure is unsafe for children to return to the classroom, not only is their education disrupted, but they are vulnerable to abuse, violence and exploitation, all but trapping them into a life of instability and poverty. For affected communities, it is imperative to restore educational continuity and bring children back to a safe, healthy learning environment as quickly as possible. AHAH has a long-term commitment to vulnerable Filipino communities. Will you join us?

Solution

From May-Sept 2024, our next school project will deliver a disaster-resilient, two-classroom building with water and sanitation facilities and a vibrant new playground for a school devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. We will again utilize Cement Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT): an innovative construction method combining the strength of cement with bamboo's natural resilience. Trusted community partners will lead training in disaster risk reduction and child protection for the entire community.

Long-Term Impact

Our immediate impact will be to provide safe classrooms and water and sanitation facilities for students and teachers in a Southern Leyte school community with severe unmet needs while including critical health and safety training for the whole community. In the long-term, all of our Safe Schools programs increase access to education and health in the disaster-affected communities we serve through our community-centered, volunteer-powered model.
