Dear Friends,
Since our last update in October 2024, we are happy to report that the first of our two schools, the Mahayag Elementary School, with its beautiful main building constructed using a sustainable Cement Bamboo Frame Technology (CBFT) design and new WASH facilities, including a 3-cubicle washroom, hand-washing station, drinking water station, and septic tank, is 100% complete!
Meanwhile, work continues on the Santo Nino National High School. Sto Nino NHS is a school that currently serves grades 7-10 located close to our Mahayag base. School administrators asked AHAH to expand their facilities to include grades 11-12, but they were in need of additional classrooms to accommodate those students.
After delays working through challenges with on-site excavation, drainage issues and a new foundation redesign, the large new CBFT 2-classroom building with its new water filtration system and drinking station is nearing completion. The handover date is scheduled for May 27, 2025.
In addition to the construction of the new classrooms and WASH facilities, we have poured slabs for two new Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) which are single room, educational flex spaces to further expand the school’s ability to accommodate the learning needs of the local community.
Our community engagement activities have been extensive on this project and include: Female Mason Training Program with four local trainees, Child Protection Training delivered by local partner, Streetlight with 146 participants, training on the use of the BioSan filtration system with 29 participants, Disaster Risk Reduction training on potential hazards in the area with 109 participants, WASH education training facilitated by local nurses - 87 students participated, basic first aid training was facilitated by the Red Cross for students and teachers for 189 participants, soil stabilization workshop led by local NGO, DISOP, and finally an upcoming Life Skills training workshop for students in grades 7-10 exploring: intimacy, stress management, screen time and puberty.
To date: 402 unique volunteers - 147 of whom are Filipino nationals - have donated 30,000+ hours of construction labor to impact 187 students and 20 teachers and school staff and hundreds more have participated in vital community capacity-building events that add value for this school community for many years to come.
PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR LATEST PHOTOS INCLUDING WASH TRAINING FOR STUDENTS AND NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION PICS!
Thank you for your interest in this amazing community school project!
