Educating children is important; educating the educators is vital. Parents and teachers are the main source of education, training and tutoring and they are the closest role models the kids get in their early life. Following the Yo Quiero Yo Puedo (I want to, I can - IMIFAP) philosophy (one can’t give what one doesn’t have), if the parents and teachers are empowered, they will then be able to empower the children. Successfully, through the 2014-2015 school year, 1,304 people have participated directly in this program impacting another 3,912 indirectly.
Children/Students:
995 children have participated in our program. Imagine just one kid, and thanks to your help, that kid named Pedro, Juan or Alejandra is now less likely to drop out from school and has less chance to be a victim of (or enrolled by) the organized crime from the northern region of Mexico. You are making these possible:
- Children who participated in the program improved 12% their attitudes toward gender equity.
- They have a more favorable perception of their teachers as promoters of reading (from 19% to 22%); they told us that teachers now encourage them more to visit the library.
- Children who participated in the program have better organizational skills that the ones who didn’t participate (32% vs 31%), as well as better critical thinking (33% vs 31%) and creative thinking (27% vs 25%).
Teachers:
The most significant progress with teachers was their ability to promote the program target behaviors in their students, from an average score of 86% to 91%. Specifically, teachers now feel they are better able to improve school climate, promote reading and written communication in their students, and develop their talents.
In the accompaniment visits the staff of Yo Quiero Yo Puedo (IMIFAP) made to the teachers, we evaluated their technical skills for communicating (verbally and non-verbally) as optimum: they now make eye contact, listen carefully to what the kids have to say and clear their doubts. They also improved their didactic abilities and the use of material, enhancing their group management; kids participate more because they trust the school environment. A couple of testimonies illustrate these achievements:
"This program has been very helpful: I have learned about myself, ¡even at my age! I also learned to communicate better with the mothers of my students because I was almost always fighting with them, and now I’m not. I have also learned what my students need to know and how to teach it to them". Male teacher, 53 years.
"The program has helped me get acquainted with my group, so now I know what issues some students may have regarding the learning process. I realize that I have a lot left to learn and I want to keep working". Male teacher, 52 years.
Parents:
At Yo Quiero Yo Puedo (IMIFAP), we facilitated 18 five hour workshops to more than 272 parents with excellent results! We received a rating of 9.4 (out of ten) in satisfaction which includes: usefulness, knowledge, learning technics, and fulfillment of their expectations. They mentioned that they learned important life skills like how to develop healthy abilities in their children regarding nutrition and eating habits, better communication, and self-awareness. Two testimonies were specially touching for us:
"Everything I saw in this workshop I felt deep within me. It hurts me to know how I'm hurting the ones I love when I'm angry. Now I have to change my ways". Parent, 35 years old.
"I will apply what I learned by playing with my children, to help them become more open in their opinions, to be more assertive." Parent, Ricardo Flores Magon Elementary School.
Sustainability:
Since we are involving the education authorities of the state of Coahuila in implementing the program, we look forward to having an effect on public policy. The innovative key of our program is that both programs and the results are sustainable. By forming people from the community (teachers, parents, students) as promoters, the virtuous cycle of transmission of content, training and empowerment is perpetuated, strengthening the social fiber and community networks.
See you next time with more awesome results!
