Thank you again for your support of HOPE's Water and Sanitation Project in Chano Dorga! As we reported in the summer, we are very pleased that the 15 new water taps in Chano Dorga are in daily use and clean, safe water is flowing, allowing local residents to gather water just 10 minutes from their home, leaving time to attend school and earn needed money for their families. THIS IS PROVING LIFE CHANGING!
This weekend we received many case studies from Chano Dorga that share individual stories about how lives have improved in just a few short months. Each story is different, but access to clean water is the repeated transformative key, unlocking a new future for each person and family.
Here is just one example:
Demekech is 35 years old, married and has three children. Before HOPE's intervention, she was a housewife, spending much of her day fetching water from a river that was a long walk from home. She was one of the poorest women in the area and had no experience of generating any money, and instead relied 100% on her husband for any money needed for her family's needs. As a farmer, his earnings were unreliant and sporadic. In July, however, her life changed when the constructed water point in front of her home was turned on!
Because she now has more time, Demekech was able to join a Self Help Group and this has created many opportunities for her. Significantly, Demekech has participated in training sessions with her SHG, including sessions on the importance of saving money and how to take out loans and discussions on how to run a profit-generating income generating activity, in additional to sanitation and hygiene training that has been provided for everyone in Chano Dorga. This training on entrepreneurship encouraged her to start saving 20 birr per week and she has ambitions to increase her savings in the future. Demekech is now actively participating in weekly meetings and plans with her group members. She said, "I am happy now for getting these opportunities. I took out a 2000 birr loan to start a business selling a local drink. I am gaining profits from this."
Demekech adds a comment about how clean water and health education has also improved her life. "I now wash my hands every time before preparing food, eating food and after using the toilet and my children are also practicing similar activities. We have pit latrine, kitchen utensil dryer, solid waste disposal and shelf made after training and advice from HOPE staff."
Therefore, Demekech, and her neighbors who have also benefitted greatly, are thankful for the opportunity of Self-Help Groups in their area, as they are now able to help their families economically. The construction of a water system made way for this marvelous change. “Thank You HOPE for this clean water gift!”
As mentioned previously, HOPE's work in Chano Dorga will continue until September 2020. Health education will continue to be taught - in community meetings and house to house - and 380 women who have formed into 19 self-help groups, will continue to use their newly learnt basic business skills, whilst also saving and lending money to one another to start more income generating activities. Various monitoring and evaluation activities will also continue to ensure that HOPE fulfills its commitment to the community, that they are fully benefitting from clean water. HOPE will ensure that the local beneficiaries can manage and maintain the water system before moving on to another project, and the community will know how to stay healthy and economically invest in and improve their own futures.
As this project is now fully funded, we will be closing this project for future donations. We would instead like to encourage you to make donations to our next water and sanitation project in Zala Dola. To transform more lives with clean water, you can follow this link.
Thank you again. HOPE and the people of Chano Dorga are incredibly grateful for your donations to bring clean water and all its benefits to their community.
