Josh is 8 and homeless. He lives in a shelter with his mom and sister. He does not attend school regularly because of his families circumstances and he is frustrated...He doesn't know his multiplication tables and is behind in other subjects too. With the help of a School on Wheels tutor, he is beginning to catch up and is learning to enjoy learning! He has a new backpack and a new study buddy that he meets every week and homework is no longer a chore but an opportunity to shine!
2.5 million children are homeless each year in America. This historic high represents one in every 30 children in the United States. Child homelessness has increased in 31 states and the District of Columbia from 2012 to 2013. Children are homeless in every city, county, and state throughout our country. School on Wheels recognizes this as a high priority issue that needs to be addressed by serving as a constant support system to homeless students at a time of great stress and fear.
By providing students who are experiencing homelessness with a volunteer tutor to help them succeed in school. We are providing them with the tools they need to succeed not only in school but in life. By enhancing the educational opportunities for homeless children from kindergarten to twelfth grade School on Wheels is able to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with educational opportunities.
Education is key to ending poverty and homelessness. School on Wheels provides the tools homeless children need to succeed in schools such as school supplies, tutoring, and scholarships. When children succeed in school they succeed in life, by providing students with the best education possible to break the cycle of poverty for their generation and future generations to come.
