Introduction
The Help Children at Crosswalks Project is a community-based road safety initiative implemented by African Soul Initiative to improve the safety of school-going children when crossing busy roads. The project seeks to reduce road-related risks through community participation, volunteer engagement, awareness creation, and collaboration with schools and local authorities.
This third quarterly report provides an update on the progress made during the reporting period. Although the project continues to face financial limitations, significant progress has been made in strengthening community support and preparing for future implementation activities.
Progress During the Reporting Period
Building on the groundwork established during previous quarters, the project team continued to engage stakeholders and gather information necessary for effective implementation.
Community Engagement and Awareness
Community awareness activities continued through meetings and informal discussions with parents, school representatives, local leaders, and community members. These engagements highlighted the increasing concern about the safety of children who cross busy roads daily to attend school.
The project also continued sensitizing community members on the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children from road traffic dangers. Community feedback remained positive, with many residents expressing willingness to support future project activities.
Assessment of Road Safety Challenges
Additional observations were conducted at selected road crossing points used by school children. The assessment confirmed several ongoing risks, including speeding vehicles, limited road signage, inadequate pedestrian crossing facilities, and a lack of trained crossing assistants.
The information collected will guide future project interventions and help prioritize areas that require immediate attention once resources become available.
Volunteer Mobilization
The project team continued identifying and engaging community members interested in serving as volunteers. Discussions focused on the expected responsibilities of crossing assistants, child protection principles, road safety awareness, and community service.
The growing interest among community members demonstrates strong local ownership of the initiative and provides a solid foundation for future volunteer training programs.
Stakeholder Relationship Building
The project continued strengthening relationships with schools, parents, local leaders, and community structures. These engagements have helped create awareness about the project's objectives and increased stakeholder confidence in the initiative.
Challenges Encountered
The project continues to face challenges related to limited funding and operational resources. These constraints have delayed the procurement of safety equipment, formal volunteer training, and the launch of pilot crossing support activities.
Limited financial resources have also restricted the project's ability to conduct wider community outreach and comprehensive road safety assessments.
