1. Introduction

The Help Children at Crosswalks project is a community-based road safety initiative implemented by African Soul Initiative. The project was established to protect school-going children from road traffic dangers, particularly while crossing busy roads on their way to and from school. It promotes safe road-crossing practices through community awareness, volunteer engagement, and collaboration with schools and local leaders.

This document presents the second quarterly progress report to our donor and supporter community. During this reporting period, the project remained in its early foundation stage, as no direct funding has yet been secured. Activities therefore focused on awareness creation, community engagement, and groundwork necessary for effective implementation in future phases.

 2. Project Context and Continuity

As highlighted in the first report, Uganda continues to experience a high number of road traffic accidents, with children among the most vulnerable road users. Pedestrians account for a significant proportion of road-related injuries and fatalities, especially near schools located along busy roads.

The focus of this second reporting period was to build upon the initial steps already taken, rather than expand into full implementation. This approach ensured continuity while allowing the project team to better understand community needs and risks.

 3. Activities Undertaken During the Period

Despite limited resources, the following foundational activities were undertaken:

a)Community Awareness

  • Continued engagement with parents, community members, and local leaders to discuss child road safety concerns.
  • Informal sensitization on the purpose and expected role of the Help Children at Crosswalks project within the community.

b) Identification of High-Risk Crossing Points

  • Collection of community-based information on dangerous road crossing points near schools.
  • Observation of common risk factors such as speeding vehicles, lack of signage, and absence of crossing support.

c) Volunteer Identification

  • Identification of community members willing to volunteer once training and safety equipment become available.
  • Preliminary discussions on volunteer roles, child protection principles, and safety responsibilities.

These activities were conducted on a small scale and relied largely on voluntary participation.

 4. Challenges Encountered

The primary challenge during this quarter remained the lack of operational funding, which limited the ability to:

  • Conduct formal volunteer training sessions
  • Procure essential safety gear such as reflective jackets, stop signs, and whistles
  • Officially launch the project at selected school crosswalks

 5. Lessons Learned

  • There is strong community concern about children’s safety when crossing roads.
  • Early engagement has helped build trust and interest in the project.
  • Local knowledge is essential in identifying high-risk areas.
  • Financial and material support will significantly accelerate project implementation.

 6. Planned Next Steps

Subject to availability of funding and partnerships, the project plans to:

  • Train identified volunteers in basic road safety and child protection.
  • Procure essential road safety equipment.
  • Pilot the project at selected school crosswalks.
  • Strengthen collaboration with schools, parents, and relevant local authorities.

7. Conclusion

The Help Children at Crosswalks project continues to make steady progress in laying a strong foundation through awareness creation and community engagement. While full implementation has not yet begun, the groundwork established during this reporting period positions the project well for effective and sustainable impact once resources are secured.

African Soul Initiative remains committed to safeguarding children and looks forward to partnering with donors and stakeholders to bring this life-saving initiative into full operation.
