The project will build the capacity of refugees and host communities to increase their resilience to climate change effects, achieve food security, improve health, regenerate soils and become economically resilient. Beneficiaries shall also be provided with the tools and knowledge to establish traditional food gardens following permaculture principles, plant fruit trees, rear domestic livestock and linked to local markets and formal financial services to strengthen their economic resilience.
There are over 160,000 refugees residing in Nakivale refugee settlement, Uganda. These depend on subsistence farming, characterized by low production and poor productivity. This is caused by harsh climate change effects and lack of knowledge and skills on good agronomic practices that are climate smart. Refugees resort to participating environmentally degrading activities such as cutting trees, burning charcoal and use of chemicals in their gardens to increase food productivity.
The project will deliver actionable regenerative farming trainings, climate change awareness education, making of organic fertilizers and water harvesting. Beneficiaries shall also be provided with the tools and knowledge to establish traditional food gardens following permaculture principles, plant fruit trees, rear domestic livestock and linked to local markets and formal financial services to strengthen their economic resilience.
The project will create positive change for both people and the planet. Specifically, the project will increase refugee and host communities (women and girls) food, incomes and climate adaptation and resilience. The project will also regenerate the land and soils on which the refugees and host farmers farm, conserve the environment and biodiversity; and fosters cohesion between the refugees and host community thus promoting peaceful co-existence.
