Help Keep Families Together

Last Saturday, Step Ahead officially launched a new Keeping Families Together (KFT) cohort, which includes 12 families, comprising 18 adults and 30 children. The session marked the beginning of a new learning journey for families who are committed to strengthening relationships and creating safe, nurturing home environments for their children.

The first training session introduced the opening lesson of the KFT curriculum, “What Is a Family?”, which invites participants to reflect on the meaning and importance of family, the roles of different family members, and the essential role families play in a child’s emotional, social, and physical development. The session was supported by four community leaders and five church volunteers, who helped facilitate activities, support group discussions, and ensure that families felt welcomed and encouraged to participate.

To support meaningful engagement across ages, participants were divided into small groups for the lesson delivery: adults met in one room, older youth in another, and younger children in a separate group. While all groups explored the same core theme of family, the lessons for children and youth were adapted to be age-appropriate, using interactive and creative activities designed to help them understand what family means to them and how they belong within it.

Throughout the session, families shared personal reflections and experiences, creating a respectful and inclusive learning environment. The small-group format also allowed staff to begin understanding each family’s strengths, dynamics, and support needs.

The day concluded with a shared lunch, providing time for families, community leaders, volunteers, and staff to build relationships, strengthen trust, and begin forming a supportive community as the cohort moves forward together.

Step Ahead recently spoke on a panel about Orphanage Trafficking. Did you know that orphanage trafficking is a hidden but devastating form of child exploitation? It occurs when children are deliberately recruited or kept in residential care institutions—not because they are without parents, but because poverty, family crises, or false promises make caregivers believe that sending their children away will give them a better future. Traffickers and unscrupulous orphanage operators often profit from this system, using children to attract donations, volunteers, or even tourists. Research shows that the majority of children living in orphanages worldwide still have at least one living parent, proving that most separations are unnecessary and harmful.

The impact on children is profound. Institutionalization can cause developmental delays, attachment disorders, and long-term emotional trauma. When family ties are severed, children lose the safety and nurturing environment that is essential for their well-being. Instead of protecting children, orphanage trafficking exploits their vulnerability and perpetuates cycles of poverty and family breakdown.

At Step Ahead, we work hard to prevent orphanage trafficking. It requires a shift in both mindset and practice. First, families must be supported before the crisis reaches the point of separation. Poverty alleviation, parenting support, community services, and social protection measures help caregivers keep children at home. Second, strong gatekeeping mechanisms are essential: we are working with governments and local authorities to ensure that alternative care is only considered when family-based options have been fully explored. Third, awareness campaigns can inform donors and volunteers about the harm caused by orphanages, redirecting their generosity toward family-strengthening initiatives. Finally, collaboration between governments, NGOs, faith communities, and international partners is crucial to enforce regulations, close exploitative orphanages, and develop safe foster care, kinship care, and community-based solutions.

Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving family. By tackling the root causes of separation and resisting systems that exploit children, societies can end orphanage trafficking and protect the dignity and future of the most vulnerable.
