Our Keeping Families Together (KFT) program supports a single auntie to care for her 7-year-old nephew. Ms. Chalerm (nickname Daeng) and her husband, divorced 5 years ago leaving Ms. Chalerm struggling to pay her bills and make ends meet. She cares for a young nephew, age 7, whose parents are not able to because of health issues. When we first met Daeng she was running a small micro-business selling snacks in the market at Klong Toey’s (Bangkok’s largest slum community). In order to invest in her business, she borrowed money from acquaintances to cover expenses and business investments. She was in debt and struggling to make enough to cover her daily expenses and repay her loans.
Through our KFT program, Daeng learned about budgeting and separating her personal expenses from her small business expenses. We gave her a micro-loan to purchase more supplies to improve her business and increase her income. She was eager to learn about financial literacy and start decreasing her debt. After about 8 months in our program, she started paying off her debt and began saving. She can now provide for her daily needs and help her nephew stay in school.
Our KFT programs offers bi-monthly trainings and weekly home visits to ensure the learning is implemented. During every training the children are taught the same lessons on their level. Daeng and her nephew love to join the trainings and participate in our Family Fun Days. Dang is excited to soon be debt free and continues to practice good financial management! We are so proud of Daeng!
