Serving Families at Risk in the Global Pandemic

In January, we started the new year very engaged in our work serving vulnerable families through our Keeping Families Together Program. We finally finished updating the 9 Module Curriculum and now working on a Training Manual Update. We have also been serving on the Thai Government Task Force to Draft Foster Care Policy and write Standards of Care. This has been challenging, yet rewarding as we know these policies will protect children.

During February we prepared for a training on "Caring for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Families" for 70 local leaders across Central and Northern Thailand. One leader said that he has an orphanage with 37 children and after attending our training, he will be looking to transition the children safely back to their families. And  for those children that cannot safely return, he will find foster families for them.

We also saw 3 more mothers released from Bangkok Immigration Detention Center and reunited with their 6 children so far this quarter. Our Step Ahead team is an amazing group of people and we feel so honored to work with them.

We appointed a new Director of Programs, Khun Mattika (Pou is her nickname). She has been a faithful team member and grown in her leadership the past year.

On April 1, we had all our staff work from home, as we continued to work hard and safe, to flatten the curve for Thailand. Several times a week we Zoomed All-staff meetings. Further, leadership met for staff supervision with each staff member individually weekly.

Khun Mattika was so important to lead our team forward as the pandemic began to impact Thailand in March and April. We were able to safely with social distancing and keeping out of crowded situations distribute relief packages to our families at-risk in our networks in Bangkok's largest slum community and Southern Thailand.

In this pandemic and now moving into the New Normal context our funding has been greatly stressed so we appreciate very much you supporting women an children at risk in Thailand now through Step Ahead.

Thank you.
