Computer Club Progress and Achievements

By Simphiwe Ndlovu | Enterprise Computer Club Coordinator

The Enterprise Computer Club has continued to make encouraging progress with the children enrolled in our computer literacy program. With the support of our local multimedia intern, we identified GCF Global as the most suitable platform. The course has proven to be the right choice, offering both tutorials and practical learning opportunities that make it easy for the children to follow and practice.

Over the past few months, we have been working through the Computer Basics section, which contains a total of 23 lessons and a quiz. So far, the children have completed seven lessons, covering:

  • What is a computer?
  • Basic parts of a computer
  • Understanding operating systems
  • Using a mouse and keyboard
  • Setting up a computer
  • Ports and connections
  • Software vs. hardware

Each lesson includes a built-in tutorial, which has been very effective in helping them learn step by step. Since the course requires learners to have a Google account, our coordinator created Google Family Link accounts for all 20 children (ages 9 to 13). This has enabled each learner to participate fully and safely in the lessons.

Key Highlights: Children’s Progress So Far

  • Mouse Skills
    • 60% of students can now use the mouse confidently, including understanding left-click and right-click functions.
  • Typing Skills
    • 85% of students are typing at a reasonable speed for their age and can use special keyboard characters.
  • Computer Knowledge
    • 75% of students can explain the different types of computers and their uses.
    • 80% of students can identify and explain the function of each computer port.
    • 70% of students can clearly distinguish between software and hardware and understand the role each plays in making a computer function.

These results highlight the steady progress being made and the enthusiasm of the learners.

Next Steps

At the end of the course, the children will take a quiz to assess their understanding of the Computer Basics unit. Upon successful completion, they will be awarded certificates. This recognition will not only celebrate their achievements but also motivate them to continue learning.

We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm of the children and the steady progress they have made so far. This course is equipping them with valuable skills that will support their education and open doors to many opportunities in the future.

We would like to sincerely thank our dedicated team, our amazing volunteers, and our generous donors. Without your support, commitment, and contribution, none of this would have been possible.
