Dear Supporters,
This report covers what has been achieved, with your support, by Diakonia Agapes between February – November, 2018 in villages of the Kuçova Municipality, Albania.
Establishment of the Health Outreach Activists (HOA) group - There were two HAOs groups established: The first group with 35 females was established in Tapi village during February 2018 and the second group with 20 females was established in Perondi village during June 2018. The groups were composed of women of different professions such as: nurses, midwives, students, entrepreneurs and teachers and they attended the three one-day workshops that focused on:
- Health Outreach Activist and community mobilization;
- Cervical Cancer and the importance of PAP tests;
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
By attending the workshops, the HOA received information related to: the role of the HOA, community mobilization, patients’ rights, the role of the primary health care personnel for health in the community; Symptoms of Cervical Cancer, what a PAP-test is and when it is performed; Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infection and its treatment. During all the sessions, the importance of periodical check-ups for women was emphasized. Being healthier, women can better serve their families and their communities. All the HOA established their women’s groups in their respective areas where they organized health meetings related to the cervical cancer, PAP-test and Sexually Transmitted Diseases prior to the gynecological examinations. The participants expressed that it was the first time for them to participate in Health Outreach activities. Having HOAs in the community beside the primary health-care personnel ensures reaching more people in the community, providing health information for the importance of periodical check-ups as well as builds bridges of collaboration between citizens and primary health-care personnel.
Gynecological examinations offered specialized medical assistance for the women who were part of the project. The examination also aimed to bring awareness among women for the importance of medical checkups that help to prevent diseases. During this time, a total of 89 women had PAP smears, 238 women were screened for STDs. The examinations were conducted by a team of two people, (a gynecologist and a lab technician). It was organized at the health center in the village. A list of the women checked was compiled with the respective prescription. The majority of women who did the vaginal smear test resulted with vaginal infection (differing levels), due to the low level of personal hygiene of the reproductive organs, low level of information related to STDs as well as the low number of the primary health care providers in the area. Women who had symptoms of an STDs were sent to specialized clinics for further examinations. The results of the visit and prescription for each woman were written in the health notebook published in the project framework by the gynaecologist.
300 Health notebooks were printed and distributed to the women involved.
We ask you to continue to support our effort to reach the remaining 650 women in remote Albanian areas that will contribute to the important improvement of their health enabling them and their families to be healthy.
