The Stories of our elderly community

By Carolina Ospina Cadavid | Project Manager

A Story of Resilience: José Fernando’s Journey

José Fernando Arboleda, a young worker from Concordia, Antioquia, suffered a life-threatening accident that left him with severe burns across his body. After being rescued from a fire on his farm, he was transferred to our hospital, where he began a long and intense recovery.

“At one point, the only option was to amputate my legs,” José recalls. “But today, I walk again.”

His journey has included ten surgeries, months of hospitalization, and emotional challenges. Yet, with the support of his family and the San Vicente community, José regained his strength.

“This experience has brought my family closer together,” he says. “If I could overcome this, others can too.”

Cases like José’s are treated in our Adult Burn Unit, which was fully renovated in 2025 advancing the capability of our spaces for critical care.

Moments That Heal: Leonela’s Birthday

For Leonela Gómez, a hospital stay due to kidney failure meant spending her birthday far from home. But even in a situation full of uncertainty, hope found its way in.

On her birthday, Leonela´s spirits lifted by recieving the news that her kidney function had improved. Nurses decorated her room, and messages from her family she saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

“I never imagined a birthday like this,” she shared. “But today I feel stronger and more hopeful.”

Leonela’s story reflects the importance of emotional care. Through small but meaningful gestures, we help patients feel seen, supported, and accompanied during difficult times.

Impact in Elderly Care

Thanks to your support, we continue to provide high-quality care for our community:

  • 9,244 surgeries performed in 2025
  • Specialized procedures from Epilepsy treatment to Deep brain stimulation

Each procedure represents not just care, but a chance for renewed life and independence especially for our elderly patients who rely on timely, specialized treatment.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In 2026, we will further strengthen our adult and elderly care services by acquiring a video tower for laparoscopy and arthroscopy, enhancing surgical precision and reducing recovery times for our patients.

This investment will allow us to:

  • Improve surgical outcomes
  • Expand minimally invasive procedures
  • Provide safer, faster recoveries for our critical older patients

Together we look to the future

Because of you:

  • Patients receive not only treatment, but dignity
  • Families find support during their most difficult moments
  • Hope reaches those who need it most

Your donation ensures no patient young to old goes without care in our community
