Sangita's Story
Sargita, an eight-year-old girl, is one of four children living with their mother in a small village. Their home was destroyed in the earthquake and the family now live in a makeshift tin hut on a small plot of land in a rural village. The mother has been left alone to care for children, animals and farming without complaint. The father has gone to Kathmandu to find work in order to provide for his family and may be gone for several weeks at a time.
Our outreach coordinators visit rural villages educating and identifying children with birth deformities or disfigurements. With each case the first step is to determine if a child would benefit from surgical correction and the second step is to determine if he is a good surgical candidate. Next a conversation with the parents takes place, arrangements are made, and a date is set for surgery. We help by organizing and covering transportation lodging and food cost whenever necessary.
The surgeons removed the extra toes on the left foot and will allow healing time before the right foot is done. Having both feet operated on at the same time would increase the risk of infection and raise the pain level. Following surgery Sangita was able to walk and looks forward to wearing normal shoes within a week or so. This is only one of many children that have been helped by your donations. You have made our job possible and the children thank you.
Remember it only takes $200 to cover the cost of one child’s surgery. Hard to believe but true.
Thank You Again!
