Creating sustainability in Haiti

By Emily Coppel |

In the last year, BRAC’s Limb and Brace Center in Haiti has taken great strides toward establishing sustainability by building staff capacity, technologically equipping its offices, and developing payment systems to achieve financial independence. Thanks to donations from GlobalGiving funders, the center is on track to maintain its rehabilitation programs and outreach for the next ten years and beyond.

Successes in the last year include organizing a computer data-base to store patient information – which is now operational and managed by a data clerk – professional development for Haitian technicians including management and technical training for staff, and finally, recruitment of a new Communications Manager and Inventory Manager both of whom receive training and support from the BRAC head office.

In addition, communications materials including brochures and pamphlets have been developed and disseminated across communities and partner offices to expand patient reach. The office has also established a new payment system and tiered fee structure to better serve its existing and new patients, while ensuring it meets costs.

BRAC is hopeful that the BLBC will continue to play a vitol role in the community, providing prosthetics and rehabilitation services to those who otherwise wouldn't have access to services.
