The Need Continues

Merry Christmas from the Haiti Hospital Appeal!

We want to take this opportunity to wish all our supporters the very best of seasons greetings. Christmas can be a wonderful time of the year, yet it can also hide us from the realities of life for the hurting and the broken, wherever they might be.  For us, we seek to continue to bring hope and new life to the people of Haiti through health care services. It really has been an exciting year. Even today, construction continues on our site. Yet, we look to next year believing greater things are yet to come.

Unfortunately Cholera continues to threaten the lives of many, and this Christmas our staff in Haiti will be busy continuing to respond to this urgent need.  In October we had over 1000 patients in our Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC). This is one of the highest numbers of patients we've have had since the epidemic.  The MSPP (Government Health Service) who we are working with to run the centre have had to fly up 20 additional nurses from Port au Prince to help deal with the ever increasing numbers.  HHA CEO recalls one specific night...

'One night I had a call from our ambulance service for a cholera emergency.  Two children from the same house, both with cholera.  As we drove up the dirty, bumpy track to their home, we passed through a large gate and entered a completely unfinished/derelict house.  There was only one room vaguely finished, with no plaster on the walls, paint, electricity, water or anything.  Puddles littered the ground and a few old dirty sheets lay as a thin cover for this desperately poor family, huddled upon the concrete floor.  Even having been in Haiti for so many years now, their abject poverty shocked and humbled me, and the reality of the injustice of their situation caught hold of me.  Returning to our CTC with these two young children, the staff invited me to look at the rest of the centre.  Our CTC was full, cholera cases on another increase, and every spare space filled.'

What We Are Doing

Cholera is a disease that Haiti as a nation will have to contend with for many years since it was introduced to the country in October 2010. Our original response was effective, yet as happened in July and October, there will be an upsurge in cases at times, a spike – which we need to be able to respond to immediately.  We know what to do to reduce the impact of the outbreak – we’ve done it once before. What we need is the funding to continue running the treatment centre at our site, which is currently the largest in North Haiti.

This work needs your help if it is to succeed. Can you support it? If yes, please donate today. Thank you.

Keep an eye out on our website for information about a few events taking place over the month of January. On the 12th we remember the 2nd year anniversary since the earthquake.

Thanks for all your continued help and support, we wish you a very happy new year.

With love

All of the Haiti Hospital Appeal Team
