What you've achieved so far!

On behalf of everyone at the Haiti Hospital Appeal we wanted to write to pass on our deepest thanks for your recent support.  The Cholera epidemic that has hit Haiti has caused wide scale tragedy and suffering.  Yet, thanks to the support of individuals like you, progress is being made.

When we launched our cholera response in Cap-Haitien (Haiti's second largest city) in November, the city was in a desperate state.  Dead bodies were literally being left in the streets, and between 1000 -1,500 news cases of cholera were being expected every day.  At that point hospitals were completely packed and unable to meet the increasing need.  With the desperate sanitation situation and the lack of appropriate support there was a 13% cholera related morality rate.

Thanks to your support we were able to help set up a Cholera Treatment Centre which has a 200 bed capacity, and has served well over 2,500 patients.  We also launched some cholera rally posts across a number of communities.  In total we've helped support over 50 rally posts, which have been open 6 days a week, and helped to support over 5,000 families.  These posts have helped to distribute over 1 million water purification tablets, soap, disinfectant and education materials.  This was supported through several community leader education conferences which provided urgently needed education on cholera for over 800 community leaders.

In partnership with a number of other NGO's, thanks to a collaborated effort, we jointly helped to decrease the cholera mortality rate from 13% to 0.5% (which is below the national average.)  This highlights the massive and significant difference you've helped achieve.  Yet, despite this great work, there is still a huge amount to do.

This Lent period the Haiti Hospital Appeal is launching a special appeal in memory of a dear girl who was close to our hearts.  Tragically this little toddler called Christella died in January having caught cholera.  Around 5000 children die every day around the world from water related diseases.  We're asking our supporters to draw alongside us, and help remember children like Christella during lent, simply through giving up one little item.  For instance, it could be coffee, a can of coke, chocolate etc.  With the money saved through that little challenge, we're asking people instead to donate what they've saved towards our work.  If you'd like to find out more, please visit: www.haitihospitalappeal.org

Please continue to support this urgent work.  You're help is making a big difference.  If you'd like to find out more about how you're help is making a difference please contact us today.
