Chiapas disaster response efforts: Final Report

By Jaime Mok | DR3 Pogram Development Manager, HFHI

After the 7.1  Earthquake in Sept 2017 that destroyed more than 150,000 homes in Mexico, serious damages to critical infraestructure and a considerable number of fatalities in  Morelos, Puebla, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Mexico City, Habitat for Humanity Mexico (HFHM), a local organization that promotes housing as an important human right, launched the Reconstruction Program of 1,446 homes in the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico City.

Through this program, more than 45,000 direct and indirect jobs were generated in the affected communities. The main purpose was to support 4,300 people to recover their homes, in addition to promoting a sense of belonging by strengthening the social fabric within the communities.

In Chiapas, a total of 162 new homes were rebuilt thanks to the support from Global Giving donors!!  Thank you so much!  Please take a look to our attached Final Report in english.

Trough a set of trainings we were able to  provide educational tools to each one of these families so that they carry out the work of promoting practices and healthy habits in the home. In that sense, a Home Maintenance Manual has been also elaborated and distribuited to each family, so they can reduce further damages to their houses and disaster vulnerability by providing proper maitenance.

Our reconstruction program still is going on in other states and there is still many affected families who are still lacking a home or need to reinforce their houses so they wont be destroyed in the next earthquake.  Habitat for Humanity Mexico will continue working with governement, foundations, private sector and volunteers to keep providing decent and safer homes to other affected families and will promote Disaster Preparedness Campaigns and projects as a way to build more resilient communities.

Please,  continue considering supporting our Earthquake response and Disaster Resilience work in Mexico.
