Ethiopia is losing 92,000 hectares of forest annually, fueling climate change, food insecurity, and water scarcity. The "Green Shields Ethiopia" project will restore degraded landscapes by planting 10 million climate-resilient trees over 5 years, while creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and building long-term climate resilience. This initiative will directly engage local communities, especially women and youth, to ensure sustainable management of restored areas.
Rapid deforestation and land degradation threaten rural livelihoods. Climate shocks (droughts, floods) are destroying farmlands and water sources. Millions face worsening food insecurity and poverty. Lack of community-led, large-scale reforestation programs leaves gaps in climate adaptation.
Over 5 years, this project will: Establish 150 nurseries producing 12 million seedlings. Plant and maintain 10 million trees across 6 regions. Train 5,000 farmers in climate-smart agroforestry. Employ 200,000 people in green jobs. Restore 50,000 hectares of degraded land. Use drones and satellite technology to monitor growth and survival rates.
Expected Long-Term Impact by 2031 10 million trees thriving across Ethiopia. 2.5 million tons of CO captured. 200,000 people with sustainable green jobs. 50,000 hectares of land restored and protected. Improved food security and incomes for 500,000+ people.
