Warm greetings from Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO).

We are pleased to share our latest progress report for the project, “Green Shields Ethiopia (#72054)”. This initiative is dedicated to promoting environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods in vulnerable communities across Ethiopia.

At a time when climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation continue to threaten livelihoods and ecosystems, this project is working to build greener, healthier, and more resilient communities.

Project Overview

Over the past quarter, our efforts have focused on environmental restoration, community awareness, and sustainable practices.

Our mission is clear:
to protect the environment, strengthen climate resilience, and empower communities to sustainably manage natural resources.

Progress So Far (January – March 2026)

The project has been implemented in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas, reaching:

Community members affected by environmental degradation
Youth groups and volunteers
Smallholder farmers
Schools and local institutions

Through integrated interventions, we are fostering environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

Major Achievements

1. Tree Planting & Environmental Restoration

Planted over 2,500 tree seedlings in targeted communities
Promoted reforestation and land rehabilitation efforts
Engaged local communities in environmental stewardship

2. Climate Awareness & Education

Conducted environmental awareness sessions for 300+ participants
Educated communities on climate change, conservation, and sustainability
Promoted eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction and recycling

3. Youth Engagement & Green Initiatives

Mobilized youth groups for environmental campaigns
Organized community clean-up activities
Encouraged youth-led green innovations and leadership

4. Sustainable Livelihood Support

Introduced climate-smart agricultural practices
Supported households with knowledge on sustainable land use
Promoted small-scale environmental income-generating activities

Restoring Hope Through Trees – Addis Ababa

Challenges Encountered

During implementation, we faced several challenges:

Limited resources to meet increasing environmental needs
Climate variability affecting tree survival rates
Low awareness in some communities at the start
Need for continuous follow-up and maintenance of planted trees

Despite these challenges, strong community participation has driven meaningful progress.

What’s Next? (April – June 2026)

In the coming months, FUGAO plans to:

Plant 5,000 additional trees
Expand environmental education programs
Strengthen youth-led climate initiatives
Improve tree survival through follow-up and care systems
Promote sustainable waste management practices
Build partnerships with schools and local authorities

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Over the past three months, Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO) has continued its commitment to protecting Ethiopia’s fragile ecosystems and strengthening community resilience through the project “Green Shields Ethiopia.”

Across Ethiopia, environmental degradation, deforestation, climate shocks, and unsustainable land use are threatening livelihoods, food security, and the well-being of future generations. Green Shields Ethiopia responds by empowering communities to restore natural resources, adopt climate-smart practices, and act as guardians of their environment.

Thanks to your generous support, communities are not only restoring land and planting trees—but also building long-term resilience against climate change.

Progress So Far

From September to December 2025, FUGAO implemented environmental restoration and climate resilience activities across Amhara, Oromia, Southern Ethiopia, and Afar regions, focusing on:

Smallholder farming communities
Youth and women-led environmental groups
Climate-vulnerable households
Community environmental committees

All interventions were implemented in close collaboration with local authorities, environmental experts, youth volunteers, and community leaders to ensure sustainability and local ownership.

Major Achievements (September – December 2025)

1. Reforestation & Ecosystem Restoration

Planted 32,500 indigenous and climate-resilient tree seedlings
Rehabilitated 120 hectares of degraded land through soil and water conservation
Established 8 community-managed tree nurseries

2. Climate-Smart Agriculture & Livelihood Support

Trained 540 farmers in climate-smart and sustainable farming practices
Distributed drought-resistant seeds and farming tools to 420 households
Introduced composting and water-harvesting techniques in 15 communities

3. Youth & Women Environmental Leadership

Formed 18 Green Youth Clubs in schools and communities
Engaged 260 youth volunteers in tree planting and environmental awareness campaigns
Supported 95 women in eco-friendly income-generating activities (seedlings, fuel-efficient stoves)

4. Environmental Awareness & Community Action

Conducted 22 community environmental awareness sessions
Organized clean-up and watershed protection campaigns in 12 locations
Established Community Environmental Protection Committees to monitor restored areas

Early Impact & Community Stories

Restoring the Land – Oromia
Farmers report improved soil moisture and reduced erosion after hillside rehabilitation and tree planting. Crops are showing stronger early growth despite erratic rainfall.

Women managing tree nurseries are earning income while contributing to environmental restoration.

Youth Green Clubs are leading environmental education activities, inspiring schools and neighbors to care for their surroundings.

Challenges We Encountered

Despite progress, we faced several challenges:

Prolonged dry spells affecting seedling survival
Limited water access in remote areas
Rising costs of tools and transportation
Need for continuous community follow-up to ensure maintenance

To address these, FUGAO improved seedling care techniques, strengthened local monitoring systems, and adjusted planting schedules to match local climate conditions.

What’s Next? (January – March 2026)

In the coming months, FUGAO plans to:

Plant 40,000 additional trees
Expand land rehabilitation to 200 more hectares
Scale climate-smart agriculture training to new districts
Strengthen women-led green enterprises
Train 50 additional community environmental facilitators
Establish school-based environmental learning hubs

Sustainability & Long-Term Vision

Green Shields Ethiopia is designed for long-term impact by:

Strengthening community ownership of restored land
Linking environmental protection with livelihoods
Building local environmental leadership
Promoting climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction
Integrating efforts with local government environmental plans

By 2030, FUGAO aims to support 100,000 people through environmental restoration and climate resilience initiatives across Ethiopia.
