This project will empower young people in Accra, Ghana to transform organic waste such as coconut shells and agricultural residues into eco-friendly cooking briquettes and biochar. By establishing a youth-led production hub, the initiative will reduce urban waste pollution, promote clean cooking solutions, and create green livelihood opportunities for young climate entrepreneurs.
Accra generates large volumes of organic waste such as coconut shells and agricultural residues, often dumped or burned, causing pollution and emissions. At the same time, reliance on charcoal contributes to deforestation and climate change. Many young people also lack access to green jobs. Trained youth are ready to produce briquettes but lack equipment and workspace to start.
This project will establish a youth-led Waste-to-Biochar Innovation Hub where 15 trained youth convert organic waste into clean cooking briquettes. Coconut shells and other biomass will be carbonized and processed into eco-friendly fuel. The hub will also introduce biochar training for climate-smart agriculture while supporting youth entrepreneurship.
The project will demonstrate how organic waste can create clean energy and green jobs. As it grows, the hub will train more youth, expand briquette production, and introduce biochar solutions that support climate-smart agriculture. The model can be replicated across Ghana and other African cities facing waste pollution and youth unemployment.
