2007: 25% elementary students went to high school. Biggest challenges: access, (11 secondary schools in 25,336sq km) quality, the cost of school fees, uniforms and supplies. 2011: only 6, 500 secondary schools spread across the country. The closest high school to Aremiet is16km. 2013: areas of Kenya have a high literacy rate, 87% ; pastoralist communities' can be as low as 8.1%. Many Kenyan youth have only a basic level of education, few usable skills, and minimal employment opportunities.
"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."-Nelson Mandela. GCA increases access and serves the pastoralist community. GCA integrates critical thinking, problem solving and life skills in each individualized curriculum plan, increasing the skills sets and employability of graduates. GCA operates year round with special options available during traditional holidays strengthening the opportunity for success. GCA offers alternative payment options.
It is expected that in five years GCA will impact over 1,000 students. Construction will provide a boarding capacity of 200 students, adequate classrooms, vocational training classrooms, a multipurpose room and teacher housing. Active and personalized integration of life skills, art, culture, and music, lifelong learning, portable curricula, flexible boarding and response to community need ensures that GCA will meet the needs of the community of Aremiet and its surroundings for years to come.
