Exciting Start to a New Year

By Jacob Marling | Director of Finances

Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,

The fall semester has brought a huge amount of excitement to GlobeMed from both working with Kallpa and recruiting new undergraduate members to our organization. Just last Tuesday we accepted 25 new members into our organization. These members come from all over the country and world with different majors, class years, and a diverse set of interests. While each new and returning member is unique in their own way, our dedication to our partnership with Kallpa Iquitos is a common thread that ties us all together.

Already our campaigns team has been putting together events throughout our campus to raise funds for Kallpa Iquitos. Some of the projects that we will be working on in Rochester this semester include a Global Marketplace thrift shop event, a group competition event where teams will take part in trivia games, apple stacking, and foot races, and an art gala in December. While working on our campaigns here in Rochester, we are constantly learning more about Kallpa Iquitos and public health and social justice issues throughout the world in our weekly Global Health University (ghU) sessions.

One of Kallpa's initiatives in Iquitos has been to promote community centers in 7 neighborhoods in the city. Using funds raised from your generous contributions the different community centers have decided to build and improve their libraries, start creating parks in their neighborhoods, and have started carrying out a plan to clean and level one of the main streets in the Santa Lucia neighborhood. In addition to helping manage the community centers, Kallpa also uses funds to maintain sexual and reproductive health centers at some of the community centers. The centers provide culturally sensitive information regarding sexual health and encourage youth in the community to visit the centers to learn about sexual health and discuss any issues they may be having with professionals at the center.

The hard work and engagement of Kallpa Iquitos, with the support of your donations, have allowed the programs set in place by the people of Iquitos, Peru to flourish and grow. Your support in helping with campaigns, attending events, and making donations is appreciated beyond belief. Thank you for everything!

In Solidarity,

GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
