Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,
This is an incredibly exciting time of year for both Kallpa Iquitos and GlobeMed at the University of Rochester because six interns from GlobeMed at the University of Rochester have been lucky enough to get the opportunity to assist Kallpa Iquitos directly by going to Peru for a month!
Kallpa and the interns have been extremely busy since the last project report. Kallpa has seen attendance at the the youth groups remain steady, and just recently Pampachica held a mural painting contest where residents were encouraged to paint murals addressing issues within their community such as pollution and domestic violence. In addition to starting to talk about problems within their community, Kallpa has also been active in combating these problems. Take pollution for instance: in addition to last year's trash conversion fashion show, the youth in Pampachica have advocated for a cleaner community by placing trash bins throughout El Aguaje and helping clean up trash that migrates into the community during rainy season.
To help empower youth in Pampachica, Kallpa Iquitos has been active in holding "talleres" or workshops at the community youth centers that present information regarding important issues and help the youth hone their leadership skills. The talleres are structured more as conversations rather than lectures and encourage the youth to ask questions and share their thoughts about the issues being discussed. Some of the topics of the talleres include sexual and reproductive health and understanding the qualities of a good leader.
The work being done in Pampachica by the youth and Kallpa Iquitos is encouraging, empowering to the area, and helped tremendously by your donations. Thank you for your contributions, and we and Kallpa Iquitos look forward to your continued support!
In solidarity,
GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
