Together, Kallpa and GlobeMed Work Together as Partners

Dear GlobeMed Family and Friends,

After weeks of final exams and winter break relaxation, GlobeMed at the University of Rochester is back in action! The chapter continues to work with our partner Kallpa Iquitos to promote equal access to health, particularly with youth, in Iquitos, Peru. Kallpa has made significant progress in regards to program development over the last few months and we would like to share these updates with you.

Since the summer 2013 GROW internship, Kallpa has established all of the youth groups in the community's nine neighborhoods. The communities held an inauguration ceremony to celebrate this immense progress. Many of these groups, such as those in the Pasaje Ivan and El Aguaje neighborhoods, have already purchased their own youth centers! The opening of new youth centers enables children, adolescents, and youth leadership to access health and educational resources in their own neighborhoods, rather than having to travel to the central one in El Porvenir.

Next up is Kallpa’s plan to implement peer health advocacy groups, made possible by the recently established Sexual and Reproductive Health Consultory in El Porvenir. In one of the first weeks, 12 young adults visited to use the free health consulting service.

Two of our members who participated in the GROW Internship have continued to engage with Iquitos through a research project. After noticing disappointing trends in the number of students who finish classes in preparation for the Secondary School Exit Exam, these members decided to research factors that impact educational outcomes. The goal of the project is to provide local planners with education assessment data in order for them to create programs that increase school completion.

Both Kallpa and GlobeMed appreciate your support, as the above achievements could not have been possible without you and we hope for your continued support in the future.

In solidarity,

GlobeMed at the University of Rochester
