This Summer, the Global Climate Resilience Fellowship Program (GCRFP) introduced two undergraduate students to our Global Resilience and Outreach Center in Accra, Ghana, West Africa to explore climate-related issues in Africa and identify Community Crafted Resilience Solutions (CCRS®) through strategic partnerships and interactions.
Fellows explored villages and communities through Ghana to research and explore issues such as drought, flooding, sea level rise, and coastal erosion while specifically analyzing the impacts of climate on vulnerable and underserved populations including women, youth, and rural populations. Throughout this enriching experience, Fellows met with the Parliament of Ghana, Metropolitan Assemblies (Mayors), universities, community serving organizations, nonprofit organizations, and village chiefs and stakeholders providing them firsthand knowledge of climate impacts and the opportunity to allow community-based participatory research to guide innovative climate solutions.
Fellows also explored the rich culture and history of Ghana allowing for a well-rounded experience in climate, culture, customs, traditions, and historical contexts of African American history and its ongoing impacts globally. Through this experience, Fellows collaborated on ongoing research while completing a capstone project identifying ready-to-implement solutions that will be leveraged for future climate work in Africa through our I-DIEM Africa initiative. As a pilot program, we are incorporating lessons learned and new opportunities to continue to grow the Fellowship while expanding the Program to include additional Fellows from across the country in our upcoming program offering.
