Dear Donor,
You are by now aware of the aversion to having daughters and low value given to their lives in Haryana, represented clearly by the alarming sex ration of 834 girls to 1000 boys.
Our work to put an end to Gender Biased Sex Selection & Gender Based Discrimination, and demonstrate the value girls and women bring to our lives continues creating impact with our on-ground community intervention.
Breakthrough has been working towards creating an enabling environment of gender equality and rights for school children across its four intervention districts. The enrollments for this year into our Taaron ki Toli (Gang of Stars), programme are 16,152 students from grades 8 & 9. By working with schools and creating an environment for gender equality, we are slowly but steadily making headway into shattering age old societal norms and bringing about culture change. A change in the mindset of children can alter the very social fabric of a community and bring far reaching transformation in the way women are perceived and treated.
Today when one walks into any of the 150 schools that we work in, one would see boys and girls seated in class together, playing together and even sharing their lunch.
Why is this a big deal you wonder? Something of this sort was unheard of a few years back. Keeping boys and girls away from each other was seen as the best solution to avoid teenage romances, inter-caste marriages, cases of couples eloping etc leading to the village getting a “bad reputation”. In order to avoid any such “unforeseen circumstances” the village head (with immense support from the villagers) came to the conclusion that there should be absolutely no contact between boys and girls right from school.
Enter Breakthrough!
Today, more than a year later, we not only have students on-board, but principals and teachers co-facilitating our sessions. In the last 3 months, our regular sessions on gender and life-skills encouraged students to organise a signature campaign in order to demand safer and more accessible educational institutions. With more than 15,000 signatures, the students and school authorities plan to approach the newly elected Panchayat (village leaders) to demand action.
Our work has also seen immense support from the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the girl child, educate the girl child) initiative which is also utilising our communication protocol, messages, pictures, and PSAs. Through the inroads built into the government, our work has reached greater scale and expansion within the state.
Our next on-ground activity is due in Sept 2015 where we plan to run a video van across the four critically affected districts for 20 days to raise awareness among local communities. Children, youth and as the community at large will be exposed in these 20 days to the issues we work on and their relevance in their lives through innovative means like magic shows, street theatre, puppets shows, and games not just to raise awareness but catalyse action. We also plan to scale up our school intervention programme.
Your renewed support would enable us to take another step forward towards making violence again women unacceptable. We hope more people (like you!) will become recurring donors and support our work on a continued basis. This consistent support enables us to carry out our programmes with a clear, long term mission in mind.
May I also request you to share our page Give girls in India a chance at life amongst your friends and family to help us make it possible to end the extreme discrimination women in Haryana face? This word-of- mouth will help us bring freedom and joy to so many girls and women in Haryana.
With hope and gratitude,
Jocelyn Jose
