Dear Donors,
Greetings!
Taking over from where I left off last time, Breakthrough hosted a bike rally from Delhi to Rohtak (Haryana) where biker groups from all around Delhi showed up to support our campaign on Gender Biased Sex Selection (GBSS) and Gender Based Discrimination (GBD) and in the process, defied gender stereotypes themselves. The presence of both men and women bikers encouraged and celebrated mobility for all.
Led by women bikers, a total of 110 bikes were flagged off from Delhi to cover more than 80 kilometers to reach our destination in Haryana. Our guests of honour included women from different walks of life (farmers, bus drivers, bus conductors and sportspeople) who stood up and spoke out against gender-based discrimination within their own families and communities and shared their stories and struggles of daily life. Breakthrough felicitated these women for their actions and as a symbolic gesture of breaking norms and stereotypes and of letting go of gender discrimination, one thousand black, red and white balloons were released in the air.
The Mission Hazaar campaign culminated with aplomb, but our work in Haryana to put an end to GBSS & GBD and demonstrating the value that girls and women bring to our lives and communities continues creating impact with more such innovative campaigns alongside our on-ground community intervention programme.
Moving on to our regular programmatic work in Haryana with schools, Breakthrough has been working towards creating an enabling environment of gender equality and rights for young people across four of our intervention districts of Sonipat, Panipat, Rohtak and Jhajjar in Haryana.
Since May 2014, we have been working with 150 schools to hold sessions on gender based discrimination and lifeskills, reaching out to more than 18,000 students by forming ‘Youth Clubs’ in government schools in partnership with the Government of Haryana. These youth clubs called Taaron ki Toli (Gang of Stars), have become an aspirational platform for school children between the ages of 10 and 14 where Breakthrough enables young people to take action for gender equality in their lives and communities. Orientation trainings on Breakthrough’s work and the issue of gender based discrimination have also been conducted with school principals and teachers from all these schools.
Our next big activity is planned for September this year where we will be launching our video van to run for 20 days across our four intervention districts in Haryana covering villages, blocks and reaching all the 150 schools we work with. Children, youth as well as the community at large will be exposed in these 20 days to the issues of GBSS and GBD as well as Breakthrough’s work through innovative ways such as magic shows, street theatre, puppets shows, and games not just to raise awareness but create catalysts to generate action.
Your contribution will go directly to support our work in Haryana to work with schools, conduct campaigns, trainings and community mobilisation initiatives.
Thank you again for your support and we definitely look forward to more of it. Do visit us at http://in.breakthrough.tv and learn about all our other work towards making violence against women unacceptable.
