Give GIRLS in India a CHANCE at life

Let me tell you a small change story! Yes, we are slowly seeing change seep into our communities in Harayana.

Sanjana's* life has changed since she started to speak up for her rights. She fought with her family and convinced them that girls are no less than boys.

Sanjana is an 8th standard student from Panipat, Haryana. She had been facing gender discrmination within home - her brother gets better food and education than her. Her family doesn't believe in higher education for girls. They send her brother to a private school where he gets better quality education while she goes to a government one.

Sanjana learnt about gender based discrimination in the #‎TaaronKiToliclasses run by Breakthrough in her school. With the help of our interactive life-skills curriculum in these classes, she slowly started becoming aware of her rights, she started asserting herself at home and convince her parents about her right to be educated as well as her brother. It took a while to convince her father but after many attempts her father promised that he would transfer her to a good private school. Today, Sanjana aspires to go to a better school and sees herself becoming the pride of her family by educating herself well and reaching her full potential.

It is with great pleasure that I would like to update you that Mallika Dutt, Breakthrough’s founder and CEO, and Sonali Khan, India Country Director, are in Oxford, at the 13th Annual Skoll World Forum. They’re there because—as the Skoll Foundation announced—Breakthrough is one of the six recipients of the 2016 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship.

This award is a enormous and prestigious honor. The Skoll Awards distinguish transformative leaders whose organizations are disrupting the status quo, driving large-scale “equilibrium” change, and are poised to create even greater impact on the world. We couldn’t be prouder of the Breakthrough team for this tremendous recognition of their innovative approach, cutting-edge methodology, and effective programs that can scale from local to global.

The Skoll Award would help Breakthrough scale our work and increase our impact. Breakthrough has big plans for leveraging the award: to catalyze 1 million social change actors who take action to make violence against women and girls unacceptable. We know that our team can pull this off–and the support from Skoll and its network of social entrepreneurs will help make it possible.

Jeff Skoll, Founder and Chairman of the Skoll Foundation, says that this year’s honorees “give voice and agency to the voiceless and marginalized, and give us good reason to believe in a radically better future.” All the awardees this year give us great hope for a better future as well, and we’re so glad to see Breakthrough recognized in this way.
