Help the many children without school uniforms who attend under-privileged rural schools in the Valley of 1000 Hills area surrounding Hillcrest, near Durban, in South Africa. In a network of 15 schools teachers identify children most in need of items of uniform. Each child is measured for their new uniforms and our team of volunteers visits the school and makes sure that the uniforms fit and have room for growth. Many of these children (aged 7 to 18) do not even have underwear.
The Valley of 1000 Hills area surrounding Hillcrest in South Africa is a severely impoverished area with unemployment of over 70%, a large percentage of child headed households, many children fully orphaned and large households surviving on R2000 ($110) per month. Children attend school in over large or over small mismash of uniform items which have been handed down numerous times and can essentially be rags. Children often don't have underwear.
The project provides hand fitted new uniforms with at least 2 pairs of underwear for each child identified as in need by their teachers. School shoes are also provided where funds allow. These children come to school ashamed and embarrassed. Those without panties get interfered with for 'fun' during non classroom time. Upon receipt of their new uniforms the children stand taller and straighter and their smiles bring joy to the heart. The gift of uniform is the gift of dignity.
With $6000 funding we will be able to provide hand fitted uniforms or uniform items for at least 200 children in this highly impoverished area of South Africa. The children will no longer suffer abuse or bullying due to the state of their clothing. They will be proud to attend school and will be able to focus on learning and not on hiding. This gift of pride and dignity will sow a seed within each child who will then have a chance at breaking the poverty cycle through education.
