The Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation is dedicated to offering assistance to the most vulnerable populations, particularly the homeless poor. The "Give Succor & Refuge to 150 Homeless Poor in Nigeria" project provides emergency shelter, food, and hygiene support to those in need, with a long-term goal of ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
This quarter, despite not receiving donations through GlobalGiving, the project was supported by $205 from Samony Entrepreneurial Ventures, the social enterprise arm of the foundation. These funds enabled us to provide targeted support to a vulnerable family in need of immediate housing assistance.
II. Project Summary
In this quarter, the primary focus was on providing emergency housing and logistical support for a particularly vulnerable family, in addition to addressing some transport and logistical needs.
Key Achievements:
- Paid house rent for one vulnerable family, providing shelter and security for 6 months.
- Allocated remaining funds towards transportation and logistics for project activities.
III. Activities and Outcomes
Activities Implemented:
1. Emergency Housing Support:
- Paid $180 to cover 6 months of rent for a homeless family, offering them a safe and stable environment during a period of financial hardship.
2. Transport and Logistics:
- The remaining $25 was used to cover transportation costs for outreach activities to assess and support other vulnerable homeless individuals.
Quantitative Outcomes:
- 1 vulnerable family (5 individuals) provided with secure housing.
- Transport and logistics costs for community outreach covered.
Qualitative Outcomes:
- Impact Story: A father of three expressed his gratitude after receiving housing support. “My family and I were at the brink of sleeping on the streets, but this house has given us hope and stability. Thank you for stepping in when we needed help the most.”
IV. Challenges and Lessons Learned
Challenges:
- Limited Funds: With only $205, our capacity to help a large number of homeless individuals was constrained, restricting us to providing assistance to just one family.
- High Demand for Shelter: The increasing number of homeless individuals requires significantly more funding than currently available.
Lessons Learned:
- Targeting emergency cases with immediate needs, such as housing, is critical but must be supplemented with more sustainable long-term solutions.
- There is a need to diversify our fundraising strategies and increase community partnerships to scale up support.
V. Financial Report
Budget Summary:
- Income:
- Samony Entrepreneurial Ventures: $205
- No GlobalGiving funds were received.
- Total Expenses: $205
Expenditure Breakdown:
- House Rent for Vulnerable Family: $180 (88%)
- Transportation & Logistics: $25 (12%)
VI. Future Plans
Objectives for the Next Quarter:
- Secure additional funding to expand our housing support for more homeless families.
- Launch skills training programs to empower beneficiaries for long-term self-sufficiency.
- Strengthen outreach efforts to identify and support the most at-risk individuals in homeless communities.
Strategies to Address Challenges:
- Intensify fundraising campaigns and collaborate with local businesses and government agencies for additional support.
- Focus on creating a network of community-based volunteers to reduce logistical costs.
VII. Conclusion
The “Give Succor & Refuge to 150 Homeless Poor in Niger” project has made strides in helping a family avoid homelessness by covering their rent for the next 6 months. While the financial support received this quarter was limited, the impact on this one family has been profound. We remain committed to expanding our efforts and providing long-term solutions for the homeless poor in Nigeria.
A Special Thank You to Our Supporters
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Samony Entrepreneurial Ventures for the contribution that enabled us to make a difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.
