Happy holidays from ETM! Our partner school students have had a semester full of hard work and discovery and even more awaits in the new year. Thanks to your generous support, a record 30,000 children are receiving in-school weekly music classes across all five boroughs of New York City. You are providing young children in need with access to a well-rounded education. Because of you, they are gaining the cognitive, social, and emotional intelligence they need to succeed in life.
For Sabrina, an eighth-grade partner school student in Brooklyn, anxiety has always been a part of her life. She has struggled with making friends. Often she would find herself with no one to talk to, sitting alone, radiating with self-consciousness and feeling very far away. But Sabrina has always been a singer. She just loves to sing and even studies old Broadway musicals to learn new songs. This year, her school began a partnership with ETM, and Sabrina has been receiving weekly music classes as part of her regular school schedule. She gets to practice singing and deepen her natural musical abilities. Most importantly, her ETM teacher shared, music class is, “…helping Sabrina overcome her social anxiety. When the class is singing together, Sabrina doesn’t have to worry about fitting in with her classmates. Instead, she is a part of the ensemble, fitting in naturally with the blend of music. Her love of music is helping her thrive alongside her peers.”
In just a few short months, Sabrina has experienced transformative emotional growth. She sings in front of her class and has even been leading her whole grade in chorus. Sabrina’s face lights up with joy and pride when she sings with her classmates. Singing is helping her connect with kids her own age. With each music class, she grows more comfortable talking to her peers and feels less and less self-conscious. Recently, she came into her music class and ran up to her music teacher and said, “I think I’m going to be the next big thing on Broadway.”
When children like Sabrina find a way to share their passion with their peers, they build better social skills, gain a stronger sense of self, and develop higher self-esteem. Sabrina may always deal with anxiety on some level but her access to music education is helping her to dream big, encouraging her to focus on her future, and filling her with hope and motivation. With the ETM music program at her school, Sabrina is receiving formalized instruction that is taking her passion and turning it into a means to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Stories like these are a testament to the impact of your generous gift. You are providing children like Sabrina with an outlet for their dreams. Thank you for believing in the power of music education! Share this report with your friends and family and show them the life-changing impact they too can have on children.
