Happy spring! Thank you for being a champion for ETM partner school students and helping nearly 27,000 New York City schoolchildren gain access to a well-rounded education. What better way to celebrate the start of spring than by sharing the story of a student who has turned over a new leaf.
Diego is a sixth grader attending partner school M.S. 424 in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. A natural musician, Diego is always eager to attend music class. But sometimes he has trouble controlling his anger. At the beginning of the year, he would frequently get into heated arguments with his peers, and he formed a contentious rivalry with one classmate in particular.
His ETM music teacher recognized that Diego’s rage was masking a struggle with self-esteem and started encouraging Diego to deepen his music skills, giving advice on how to improve and praising Diego for his accomplishments. In turn, Diego has begun to feel better about himself and has even become an asset in music class, volunteering to pass out instruments to help lessons run smoothly.
During a recent music technology class, Diego’s rivalry with his classmate resurfaced. The teacher asked both Diego and his classmate to plug into the same keyboard, so they could collaborate on music-making. At first the two were reluctant, but then something clicked. “It was a powerful moment,” explained the teacher. “Their rivalry turned into cooperation as they focused on listening to each another and playing together. Diego even took the lead and came up with many ideas for him and the other student to play.”
Through music, Diego is learning to channel his emotions productively and establishing a stronger sense of self. Diego is building towards a thriving future filled with camaraderie and joy.
Because of your generosity, thousands of partner school students like Diego are developing the critical thinking skills and self-confidence needed for success in life. You are brightening the futures of students across low-income communities in New York City simply by supporting music education! Share this report with your friends and family and show them the life-changing impact they too can have on children.
