Happy Summer from ETM!
School just finished for our nearly 27,000 partner school students, who spent the past year learning music skills and cultivating cognitive and emotional intelligence.
For Malik, a fifth-grader at a partner school in the Bronx, music made all the difference this year. He used to struggle with controlling his anger and resorted to physical altercations. Early in the fall, Malik joined the band and began befriending his fellow bandmate Jamal.
Soon Malik and Jamal were inseparable, bonding over their passion for band and common interest in music. When Malik felt he was being bullied by a few classmates, rather than acting out, Malik went to Jamal and asked him for advice on what he should do. Jamal told Malik he should reach out to his teachers for help, and this led to Malik making a turnaround in his attitude. He began treating his peers and teachers with respect, and even took on a leadership role during band rehearsals.
Later in the year, Malik was concerned about being bullied on the bus, riding to a field trip. His music teacher, Jamal, and Malik made a plan for Malik to sit next to Jamal to avoid any intimidation. His music teacher shared, “On the day of the field trip, Malik made sure I remembered our plan. He was also proud to tell me he had both his and Jamal's lunches in his backpack. Malik and Jamal were together all day long and avoided conflict. It was wonderful to see Malik turning to Jamal for advice and support.”
The boys’ friendship—born out of a passion for music and comfort with each other—made a meaningful impact on Malik’s life at school. He still looks up to Jamal and takes pride in having a friend he trusts—a friend who helps him stay out of trouble.
Malik’s transformation is just one example of the impact music education can have on a child’s life. Thank you for believing in our mission and students! Show your support for ETM by sharing this report with a family member or a friend; let them how far their support can go, too!
