It’s been an exciting quarter for ZET and Rafiki! ZET was fortunate enough to visit Rafiki ourselves, and see all the inspiring work they have done over the past 15 years to support women into education and employment. We were extremely impressed by both the organisation – how well organized and managed it is – and by the incredible work Rafiki is doing and the impact it is having – truly transforming young girl’s lives. We were lucky enough to talk to some former students and hear first-hand how they have been able to attain further education and careers thanks to the skills and confidence they gained at Rafiki. Finally, we met the current intake of 40 students and were able to see their training and progress.
During this quarter, the class undertook the first part of the course which focuses on building confidence and life skills, with classes including sewing, computing, cookery, entrepreneurship and management, hygiene, communication and multiple courses aimed to make women more aware of their rights and abilities – such as the empowerment workshop ‘Choose Freedom’.
Beyond their studies, the girls were able to engage in extracurricular activities. The first of these is an HIV workshop, which educates the trainees on the containment and management of HIV and offers free testing and counselling. This was a success, with all students taking up the voluntary testing. Another is an educational recreational trip to a national park, where students get a rare chance to relax, behave like the young women and girls they are but rarely get a chance to be, and learn more about Zimbabwe. This quarter, the centre was able to pilot a scheme where we brought in an external organisation to run a course on psychosocial issues, such as drug abuse, mental health issues and challenging personal situations, and how to respond to them and cope with them healthily. This was a huge success and the students also expressed their gratitude to have been offered this chance. Finally, the girls attend a Careers Day to learn more about their potential, motivate them, and help them learn more about the courses and work placements available to them in the rest of the training. As a result of this careers day, all the trainees have now selected their specialized courses, which include hospitality, design, teaching and event management.
It is set to be another busy quarter, as Rafiki is already conducting interviews for the next cohort and received double the number of applicants to places they can offer. As always, they will rise to the challenge and continue to support and train young women and provide opportunities for them which will transform their lives.
