According to reports by UNOCHA, Cameroon hosts over 845,000 internally displaced people as of early 2026 and over 2.9 million people are in urgent need of support due to ongoing conflict and environmental stressors. These vulnerable groups depend on limited water streams in bushes which is also used and contaminated by livestock.
Lack of clean and safe drinking water has contributed greatly to poor health, with 80% health issues and miscarriages related to waterborne diseases. Women and children are the most affected as they spend time traveling long distances as early as 5: am every day to carry dirty water on head from the stream before livestock arrives and make it worse, which is the only available source for household use and agriculture in refugee settlements in villages.
Traditional water filters are expensive and difficult to maintain and a majority of the people lives below $2 per day and cannot afford to build a modern borehole, limiting access to clean and safe drinking water. These structural limitations constitute to high prevalence of waterborne diseases, impacting on their health, economic and social well-being.
IAA is teaching families to build bio-sand filters using affordable and locally available materials. By equipping the community with these skills and water infrastructures, IAA hopes to increase long-term access to clean and safe drinking water during drought period and severe weather conditions, helping to reduce waterborne diseases by 60-75% and significantly improve health and well-being.
When you make a donation today, it is a gift of water to people who need it the most and IAA will make sure your support create impact in these communities now.
Thank you for fueling our work.
