While we do not yet have an update to share on the development of our future rescue facility, our work continues to demonstrate exactly why this project is so important. Every month, we encounter wonderful dogs and cats whose lives are at risk simply because local shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for them.
One of those dogs was Nina, a senior shepherd we pulled from the Stanislaus Animal Services euthanasia list. We thought we were saving one dog. But just a few days later, Nina surprised us by giving birth to five puppies. With this surprise welcome, we suddenly had to scramble to find new foster coverage. An eventual facility will help to manage surprises like this with a safe space for unexpected newcomers to land while we find a new foster.
Our Paws for Veterans program has also continued to grow, pairing Veterans in need with canine and feline companions while providing lifelong veterinary support. Recently, one of the dogs adopted through the program - Sissy - was attacked by several dogs belonging to a homeless individual while walking with her Veteran dad and infant human brother. Both Sissy and baby were bitten, and Sissy required extensive emergency veterinary treatment. The resulting bill was approximately $8,000. Better World Rescue covered the entire veterinary bill so that her Veteran dad could focus on caring for his injured baby without having to choose between his family's needs and his dog's medical care.
We also recently said yes to Phoenix, a sweet pit bull who was short-listed for euthanasia at Stanislaus Shelter because of a broken leg. Phoenix is now receiving the medical care he needs and resting comfortably in foster care. And four-month-old Caesar Monroy was facing euthanasia because the shelter was running out of space. He is now safe with Better World Rescue and has the opportunity to grow up in a loving home.
These dogs represent a larger problem we see repeatedly. They are not losing their lives because they are bad dogs. They are losing their lives because there are not enough resources.
Our eventual rescue facility would be a game changer. It would give Better World Rescue a place to provide temporary housing, medical care, behavioral support, and training while we search for permanent homes. Most importantly, it would allow us to say yes to dogs like Phoenix and Caesar even when a foster home is not immediately available.
