This project will help construct a training and short-term care facility for euthanasia-listed dogs in our local shelters. Having a facility that can house rescued dogs until they can move on to foster or adopter homes will give them a second chance at life that they won't get in the shelter. Dogs at this facility will also benefit from the care of our certified trainers, opening desperately needed opportunities for dogs that may need behavioral training before placement.
The Central Valley is considered a high-kill area with many of our local shelters euthanizing 14-17% of animals brought in. Adoptable animals are being euthanized regularly due to space constraints, lack of training resources, lack of medical funds, etc. Our goal with our local shelters is to help the area achieve a 90% live release rate overall, or less than 10% of animals taken in are euthanized due to severe and untreatable medical or behavioral issues.
Better World Rescue targets euthanasia-listed dogs and cats. In the last two years we have saved over 560 animals from euthanasia lists. A short-term housing and training facility will allow us to save even more animals from euthanasia, and will make it possible to specifically help with more behavioral cases. Dogs who are going to be euthanized due to kennel stress, lack of manners, minor bite histories, excessive barking, separation anxiety, etc will have an opportunity to receive training.
If we are able to provide placement for dogs, especially those with mild to moderate behavioral needs, then our local shelters will be able to send these dogs into our care instead of euthanizing them. This will help the Central Valley to achieve the goal 90% live release rate overall. It will also increase our intake capacity and community impact significantly as animals will have short-term housing available while looking for foster or adopter homes.
