Young Women’s Political Leadership Institute (YWPLI) is one of Women LEAD's flagships programs that aims for the political empowerment of young Nepali women, achieving gender equality through strengthening the knowledge of political leadership, enabling their capacity to work as an active mediator of social change and politics.
The 11-month-long intensive program is divided into various models - one of which is the experiential learning field trip which provides our Fellows with a-week long field visit experience with local representatives/ Mayors out of the valley. The aim of the field trip is to provide the Fellows with hands-on learning opportunities with local leaders, ward chairpersons, women representatives/leaders, Mayor and Deputy Mayor outside Province 3 during their field trip.
This year our 2022 YWPLI team (YWPLI Fellows and Program team) traveled to Province 2 from 6th May to 11th May 2023 to explore the geographical and political aspects by visiting Sarlahi, Saptari, and Janakpur. The purpose of the visits was to enable participants to observe the development happening in the region by themselves, interact with local leaders, politicians, and journalists, explore much about the differences of the leadership in their hometown, learn the role of youths and women in a political sphere to have a better governing system.
The panel discussions shed light on local leaders and women's challenges in achieving gender equality and representation. It also emphasized the need for meaningful representation of women in politics and decision-making roles and indicated the unique challenges faced by women in Madhesh Province. The different panel discussions and interactions with local representatives and members of provincial assemblies provided insights into the role of local governance in coordinating with federal governments. Discussion topics included core areas of development such as employment, education, health, infrastructures, agriculture, uplifting women, and marginalized communities. Fellows got to hear from leaders regarding their plans and programs to overcome such problems. Through conversations with journalists, the fellows learned about the influence of media houses on news reporting, the impact of incorrect news, and the importance of media ethics in responsible reporting. Moreover, a few of our Fellows also conducted sessions on "Child Rights and Child Marriage" at two schools in Sarlahi during one of Women LEAD's outreach programs.
Stay tuned to hear more from our 2022 YWPLI Fellows.
