The Girls on the Go project aims to address school enrolment challenges, particularly for girls, by providing a sustainable bicycle ecosystem to reduce travel time and absenteeism. Over three years, it will empower 66,600 girls with 95,400 bicycles, achieving significant educational retention and community impact. Together with Global Giving, we aim to contribute 10% toward to the total cost of the project.
Globally, 258 million children currently do not attend school. The majority are girls. According to the World Bank, distance from school is the single most important determinant of school enrolment. Across World Bicycle Relief's operating countries, girls - particularly those based in rural areas - tend to have lower educational attainment levels, attendance rates, and literacy rates.
Over the next three years, Girls on the Go intends to mobilise 66,600 girls in upper primary and secondary schools, support them with a sustainable bicycle ecosystem, and promote sustainable change through school ownership of bicycles.
When you educate a girl, you educate a nation. A Buffalo Bicycle is a powerful tool for rural students, especially girls to break the cycle of poverty. The Girls on the Go fund will provide 95,400 bicycles, empowering 66,600 girls and impacting 477,000 lives. This initiative ensures 70% of bicycles go to girls, driving a 90% student retention rate, a 40% reduction in travel time, and a 30% drop in absenteeism, paving the way for brighter futures.
