Period poverty means lack of funds to buy basic personal hygiene items: sanitary pads, soap, underwear, no access to toilets and running water, and no basic knowledge about menstruation. In Malawi many young girls experience period poverty, therefore they don't go to school during menstruation, which causes dropping out of school and, consequently, the end of education. With this project purpose to support 4600 school age girls gain access to menstrual supplies and knowledge on menstrual hygiene
- The project aims to improve girls' access to school and increase re-enrolment of girls who have dropped out through provision of reusable pads/menstrual kits and capacity building on menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health for improved performance and self-esteem. The project will ran for 1 year and aimed to end stigma and discrimination against adolescent girls who had started menstruation by promoting positive support for them.
The project will carry out educational activities about menstruation and sex education. Up to 4600 girls will benefit from the project. The project will have an impact on health status of girls through improvement of personal hygiene of the girls as a result of using the reusable pads, the knowledge and understanding of girls on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health issues will be enhanced further leading to improved health status, increased levels of confidence and active involvement
The project will provide reusable sanitary pads to more than 1,000 school-going girls, which will encourage them to remain in school and reduce, and totally eliminate absenteeism during their menstrual cycles. Non-school going youths will be encouraged to go back to school as a result of this project. Female villagers will embrace their menstrual periods with confidence and in a much hygienic way. The vision of the project is to empower girls with the knowledge and awareness on menstrual hygiene
