Hello Friends,
This month, we wanted to share the story of Vy and her family. Early this year, Vy was a recipient of a bike through our Bikes for Girls Program. We continue to work hard to locally identify young girls like Vy, who need extra support getting to school. Please enjoy reading her story and getting to know more about her family life.
Vy is an outgoing and joyful third grader who has two younger brothers and a hardworking mother who has endured so much so early in life. In 2022, Vy’s father died in a traffic accident, leaving her mother to care for three young children alone. Due to these tragic circumstances, Vy, her mother, and two younger brothers could no longer afford their rented home and had to move and live with their grandparents, who both work as sand dredgers at the local river. Vy’s mother works many long and hard hours to make enough to support herself and her three children. She works as a home-based garment worker who takes orders from local shops and other private merchants and sews custom items. Since her husband passed away, she finds herself working many hours and still finding the time to cook meals and walk her children to and from school each day. Her monthly income is very small for the amount of work she completes, making affording even the basics a challenge.
This spring, Vy received a new bicycle through our Bikes for Girls program. A gift of a bike is not only felt by the girl who receives the bike, but also by the whole family. For a family where every expense is carefully weighed, a reliable bike is more than just transportation, but a sense of freedom and independence. It also opens the door to safe access to education for Vy. By providing her with a bike, she will be able to travel to school on her own.
Thank you everyone for your donation to our Bike Program and continuing to provide bicycles to girls like Vy.
