GYANTANTRA UDBHAV PROEJCT PROGESS
GYANTANTRA UDBHAV PROEJCT PROGESS

Gyantantra has become Gyantantra Udbhav as it has scaled to New heights amongst the student to build a rock solid education foundation.

Project “Gyantantra” uses Technology to innovatively address multiple problems associated with the quality of education available to the poor in India:

     Need assessment

  • Poor level of teaching and lack of trained teachers
  • Inconsistency in teaching while teaching difficult concepts
  • Lack of motivation amongst children of the illiterate and the poor, to go to school
  • An absence of practice and printed workbooks in the Government schools, that are a right of every child
  • Lack of access to colorful storybooks, videos, and interactive multimedia learning content

Gyantantra aims to help underprivileged children with this Holistic Tech-Based Program using appropriate teaching modules. It offers:

  • Courses for children of 6 years and above till grade VI
  • Includes important lessons from English, Hindi, Mathematics, Value Education and General Studies
  • Incorporates major social issues like sexual abuse & HIV
  • Creates awareness of voting rights and the necessity of basic financial literacy
  • Helps bridge the learning in a short span of time for grown-up children who lost their years by not going to school. Many street children and working-class children learn to get back to mainstream education with the help of technology where human intervention fails to engage them

This unique virtual teacher was able to:

  • Accelerate the learning process
  • Raise the child’s reading ability to an age-appropriate level
  • Settle the child in an age-appropriate grade at the end of the intervention period
  • Help children operate computers and use technology to learn at their own pace
  • Utilize the computer lab to showcase various documentaries such as financial literacy, life skills workshops and educative presentations

Impact of Gyantantra Activities in the classrooms

Pre-assessment was conducted for each child. This included oral and written tests which are for over an hour. The questions ranged from easy to higher grade level competencies. In the current period, pre- assessment for grade III, IV & V level children was conducted across the Govt. schools as well as Literacy India community centers.

Apart from basic reading and arithmetic ability, attempts were made to measure the children’s ability to understand, express themselves, think critically and solve problems.

As per the results of the pre-assessment, there is a substantial gap between what they are required to know at a certain age and what they actually do.

Even school going children are at least two grades below the level of proficiency that they are supposed to be.  In the Base Line (Pre-test), students scored 5%, 9% and 3% respectively in Hindi, Maths & English. In the End line (Post-test) students scored 31%, 40 % & 60% respectively in Hindi, Maths & English.

The Pre-Assessment was conducted for 85 students.

All 85 students secured D Grade in their Pre-Assessment

After 6 months of teaching, Post Test was conducted for all the students. Some important findings of Post   Test, when compared to the Pre-Assessment, are:

The number of students in Grade A has increased from 0 to 15

  • The number of students in Grade B has increased from 0 to 28
  • The number of students in Grade C has increased from 1 to 32
  • The number of students in Grade D has decreased from 85 to 9
  • A student absent in the Post-test-1

  The Gyantantra pedagogy has helped:

  • Students to explore their own ideas and build a robust knowledge on all subjects
  • Effective use of technology and intervention for better learning outcomes
  • Both students and teachers feel empowered to use technology in classrooms for better learning
  • Teachers find a way to leverage technology for professional development

Name: Khushi (Name Changed) Age: 11 Location:  Kolkata

Khushi is a student of Grade III at Shastri Shiksha Sadan Gyantantra Project. When she was enrolled under the project, her performance was very poor in all subjects. She scored 12 marks out of 100. She was not able to recognize two letters words in English.

Post 6 months intervention of the Gyantantra Project, her academic performance has improved. She is now able to read and write small English sentences and also solve basic sums of Multiplication and Division.

Besides the academic performance, now she talks with confidence in class. According to her teacher, earlier she used to hesitate but now her confidence level has increased. She is able to interact and share her thoughts with others. She is also regular and comes very neat and clean to school.

Khushi, daughter of a shoemaker who earns 100 to 150 rupees per day has dreams for a better education. But Khushi is the only child of her parents. Her mother is a housewife and is doing some order-based work like assembling and packaging toys. She earns 500 rupees per month, which is not sufficient to run their family. Both of her parents want to educate their only child but due to the low income, they cannot afford that. Her parents are also uneducated and so Khushi does not get any support at home Yet this charming girl overcomes all her obstacles.

Khushi wants to be a police officer in the future.
