Partnership with the Embassy of Netherlands

By Eashaan Kappagantula | Donor Reporting Manager

Maharashtra sees an average of 1500 women and children being rescued through around 500 + raids on places of exploitation including brothels, lodges, spas etc. While rescuing victims from exploitative situations is a globally recognized strategy that sets rehabilitation is motion, many victims construe their rescue and placement at the shelter home –where they are meant to receive protection, care, education, skills training and other support—as a way of punishment for engaging in sex work.

In majority cases, victims of trafficking have only basic levels of literacy and come from poor families; many also come from communities with inter-generational prostitution where the initiation of girls into sex work is an accepted practice. It is imperative to provide the opportunities of education and exposure to employability to survivors within the shelter to prevent their lapse in same exploitative situation.

Through the project in partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands , Save The Children India  intervenes within the government run shelters and with survivors restored with families by providing opportunities of formal education and employability training/assistance and follow-up. The interventions also engage with shelter home authorities and other related stakeholders to promote a victim-centered approach to rehabilitation. As a result, survivors are empowered through educational and skills training initiatives at the shelter home and follow-up after restoration with their families.
