Geeta Found Her Freedom In Education

By Jyoti Tajane | Programme Director

Geeta* was just 12 when she was introduced to prostitution in a remote village of Madhya Pradesh, India. It was a ceremony that the family had organised where everyone seemed happy. Geeta was happy too as she was a canter of attraction and she had also seen her elder sister being showered with love by her entire village just a year back. She was to attend her first customer that day and that fetches good money to the family. Geeta was born into a family from Bedia community that engages girls in prostitution in order to provide for the economic needs of their natal family. Geeta was 16 when she was sold to working in brothel in Mumbai and rescued by police.

Geeta revealed her story during a series of art based therapy sessions conducted with her and realised that she can dream world for herself. Dropped out of school at class 5th, she has appeared for 10th standard state board exam this year and passed with flying colours.

There are thousands of girls who are not educated and have followed the same traditions all their lives. May don’t know or do not believe, that there could be a different life and choices for them.

It was support from well wishers like you that we are able to provide choices and instil hope in survivors of sex trafficking.

Thank you
