Through this update, we wish to share details about our new initiative

Sphoorti provides long term relief and rehabilitation to about 100 girl children from vulnearable backgrounds. These children are in the age group 6-18. These children are studying in STD 1 - XII and some are in Degree Colleges pursuing Engineering, Law, Pharmacy and Commerce. All of them are either semi-orphans or complete orphans.

During the Covid19 First and Second waves, these children were repatriated to their legal guardians as per Government instructions. For more than a year, these children did not receive adequate attention regarding their food and hygiene. As a result, their nutrition levels dropped drastically and most of them have been found to be anaemic.

We wish to improve their health status by reinforcing their diet with highly nutritious food. In particular, we want to give them Groundnut-candies (Chikkis) and eggs thrice a week. The weekly requirement is Rs 35 per child. We request you to provide financial assistance for our Nutrition Program for the Girl Child for 12 months starting Dec 1 2021 to Dec 1 2022.

Thank you very much for being with us all along our journey. Our children have been very fortunate to receive your patronage over the years.

In the last three months, we spent a great deal of efforts in ensuring the children are safe and protected from Covid19 Second Wave. Many parents have lost their lives or landed in deep financial crisis

1. As schools were closed by the Government, many children have been forced to attend online classes. Children from poor families cannot afford buying a mobile phone. Sphoorti took up an initiative to distribute more than 60 mobile phones/tablets in Hyderabad, Tirupati and a few more places in AP and Telangana.

2. We distributed 15 laptops to children who are pursuing Engineering and other Bachelor courses.

3. We sponsored education of more than 30 children who lost parent(s) to Covid19 in the Second Wave.

4. We have distributed sanitary pads to some girls from slum areas

5. We distributed medicines and face masks to many poor children in Hyderabad and a few areas in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

I take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting Sphoorti activities over the last couple of years through contributions to GlobalGiving Campaigns.

In this report, we would like to showcase a particular issue which was addressed through your support.

C, Sh and Sa are orphan children. Their parents hailed from a tribal area in Warangal district and moved to another hamlet in Kesamudram town in the same district 10 years ago.

They were gifted a piece of land started building a small house on it. Because of Tuberculosis, he passed away while the house remained unfinished. The children's mother also passed away 2 years ago.

Since then, the children were left to fend for themselves as there were no relatives to take care. C was working in a nearby Chicken Shop and providing for his sisters Sh and Sa. They were staying in the unfinished house using temporary roof made of rags and coconut leaves etc.

In January, we received information about their situation through local press. We decided to help the children by completing the house and providing long term support to the three children.

Accodingly, we contributed Rs 50,000 raised through GlobalGiving and got the work started. Withthe help of local organizations, we were able to complete the construction on April 7.

The District Collector inaugurated the house.

We have also been successful in placing the children in a Child Care Institution. The children will be provided support until they finish their studies.

Thank you for your support of all our campaigns on GlobalGiving. This particular campaign has been receiving your patronage for several years now.

In October, there was flooding in Hyderabad and a lot of people lost their belongings and were left with nothing. Sphoorti chipped in by providing food and other essentials for such families with a particular focus on children so that they do not starve.

In November and December, we have been focusing on providing warm clothing to deal with the hardships the falling temperatures present to poor and homeless children. We have distributed more than 1000 sweaters to children in Hyderabad and other places in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Thank you so much for your unstinted support to Sphoorti. Your generosity helps us focus on the welfare of children instead of getting stressed about financial resources.

In July 2020, we focused on keeping in touch with children who have been repatriated to their legal guardians. We have also made sure that there is no financial burden on some of the family members because of their wards staying at home for more than 4 months. In some cases, we sent money and in some instances, we provided grocery kits to those who could visit Sphoorti campus.

Through friends like you, we have been able to provide gadgets like Laptop and mobiles to some of our children who are attending online classes at STD XI and XII level.

As the schools have been shut, the teachers working in private schools are facing pay cuts and terminations. To help some of them, we started a campaign to provide Groceries worth Rs 1500 / USD 20 which would help them meet their food requirements for a month. So far, we have reached about 600 teachers while our target is to reach 2000 teachers in distress. Please check the campaign - Help 2000 teachers who lost their jobs and are starving.

A big news for July has been a donation of $18,000 for classrooms for our proposed Sphoorti Model school. The donor organization is US-based Guru Krupa Foundation which earlier supported construction of 4 rooms.

The Covid situation in Hyderabad and vicinity is not good. We hope that things will be back to normal in September/October. Meanwhile, we are procuring the necessary infrastructure for our school - dual desks, chairs, storage etc. A friend has donated a 55 in Television and another friend has offered to give 5 Projectors when our school starts functioning. We also received a donation of Rs 5 Lakhs for school from V-Guard last month.
